What makes a good climbing picture?
There are so many aspects which make good a pictures: the landscape, the composition, the route, the technical aspect, the climber himself. The most important one is the light. I shared a project with the Swiss photographer Stefan Schlumpf in Fontainebleau last spring and only there I understood its importance. With light you have more depth and contrast, you can play with colors and make it work in your own creativity. This thing is about what concerns the aestetical point of view.
The other main property is the content. A picture has to capture the essence of a story and fix it forever. In the end, specially when I take pictures, I always try to find a balance between these two main properties. It’s difficult and it takes time, but it’s totally worth it.
What inspires you in climbing photography?
Climbing photography taught me to pretend the best from myself, to discover my personal limits, to persevere and to have patience. The most important and inspiring thing that I got from outdoor photography was the possibility to travel in some places that I would have never visited. It’s an activity which absorbs me completely, as only real climbing does. You’re so much into that moment that every useless feeling disappears. This is the feeling that I’ve always looked for, because it makes me feel happy and motivated for my next adventures.
